The Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative /COSI/

In 2019 in the frames of the Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative of WHO Europe a
national COSI study was conducted for the first time in Armenia.

The WHO European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) study aims to measure
trends in overweight and obesity among primary school-aged children for monitoring of the
policy response to the obesity pandemic and intercountry comparisons.

The results of National Survey (2019) in Armenia were presented to the health community and
relevant stakeholders in 2021. Data analysis revealed presence of unhealthy eating habits
among children and their families; prevalence of overweight among 7-8 years old pupils was
27.7%, among them 12.6% were obese. These data proved the fact that overweigh has become
major public health problem among Armenian children.
